Trochodendron aralioides (wheel tree) is a member of the Trochodendraceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterised by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of half-hardy (unheated glasshouse/mild winter [-5 to 1ºc]) and is hardy in coastal/mild areas except in hard winters, though it is at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate and can survive with artificial winter protection. It features a bark fragrance.
When fully mature, Trochodendron aralioides can reach an ultimate height of 4–8 metres and a spread of 2.5–4 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers a south–facing, west–facing, north–facing, or east–facing aspect and an exposed or sheltered position. It thrives best in clay, loam, or sand soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
