Origanum majorana (sweet marjoram) is a member of the Lamiaceae family. This culinary herb exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its semi evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of tender – cool or frost-free glasshouse (1 to 5ºc), and is tolerant of low temperatures but will not survive being frozen. except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions in winter, but can be grown outdoors once risk of frost is over and features a foliage fragrance.
When fully mature, Origanum majorana can reach an ultimate height of 0.5–1 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing aspect and exposed, sheltered exposure. It thrives best in chalk, loam soil types and should be placed in a full sun position.
