Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear' (silver spear) is a member of the Asteliaceae family. This evergreen shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of half-hardy – unheated glasshouse/mild winter (-5 to 1ºc) and is hardy in coastal / mild areas except in hard winters and at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate. Can survive with artificial winter protection. It features a flower fragrance.
When fully mature, Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear' can reach an ultimate height of 1–1.5 metres and a spread of 1–1.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers an east–facing, south–facing, or west–facing aspect and a sheltered position. It thrives best in clay or loam soil types and should be placed in full sun or partial shade.
