Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' (Japanese maple 'Butterfly') is a member of the Sapindaceae family. This deciduous shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) and is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection. It features a flower fragrance.
When fully mature, Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' can reach an ultimate height of 2.5-4 metres and a spread of 1-1.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers east-facing or north-facing or south-facing or west-facing aspect and sheltered positions. It thrives best in clay or loam or sand soil types and should be placed in partial shade.
