Blechnum spicant (hard fern) is a member of the Blechnaceae family. This fern exhibits a tufted growth habit and is characterized by its evergreen foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc), and is hardy throughout the uk and northern europe. many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection. .

When fully mature, Blechnum spicant can reach an ultimate height of 0.1–0.5 metres and a spread of 0.1–0.5 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing, north–facing, east–facing, west–facing aspect and exposed, sheltered exposure. It thrives best in clay, loam soil types and should be placed in a full shade, partial shade position.
